Mouth Cancer Checks

Mouth Cancer Checks

At Mark Tangri Dental Excellence we are offering Free Mouth Cancer checks to anyone that is worried about this disease which is on the increase.

There are many signs and symptoms that occur, so it is vital that you know your mouth to be able to notice if there are any anomalies that arise. We are trained to spot the signs of oral cancers, so please make sure you are attending regular check-ups, and discussing any changes with us. If you notice an anomaly, contact us straight away and we will check it for you. It could be nothing, or it could be the difference between survival or not.

The ten-year survival rate is between 19% and 58%. This is a huge margin, and all stems on the location of the cancer, and how quickly it is recognised and then treated.

Mouth cancer can strike in a number of places, including the lips, tongue, gums and cheek. Three signs and symptoms not to ignore are:

  • Ulcers that do not heal within 3 weeks.
  • Red and white patches in the mouth.
  • Unusual lumps or swellings in the mouth, or head and neck area

If spotted and diagnosed early, the chances of a full recovery are good, but as with other cancers, the longer it goes on the less likelihood there is of beating the illness. Regular dentist check ups are a must to increase survival rates, and potentially save your life.

If you are worried about Mouth Cancer please contact us here for a Free check up.

New cases of mouth cancer are on the rise.

8,300

A rise of over 49% in relation to 10 years ago, and 135% from 20 years ago.

Last year alone, 2,722 Brits lost their lives to mouth cancer. Oral cancers claim more lives than cervical and testicular cancer combined, proving that awareness is lacking in this area.

The main causes of mouth cancer are:

Tobacco

This is the leading cause of mouth cancer. Tobacco transforms saliva into a deadly cocktail that damages cells in the mouth and can turn them cancerous.

Alcohol

Excessive drinking of alcohol is linked to more than a third of mouth cancercases in men and a fth in women. Heavydrinkers and smokers are up to 35 times more at risk.

HPV (the Human papillomavirus)

The world’s most common sexually-transmitted virus is being linked to the growth of mouth cancer cases and is expected to become the leading cause of the disease in the near future.

Diet

Research shows that a diet high in fresh fruit and vegetables can reduce the risk of developing mouth cancer.

Chewing or smokeless tobacco

Smokeless and chewing tobacco like betel quid, is not a ‘safe’ alternative to traditional cigarettes and is very common across Asia, Europe and the USA.
