Tips on how to take care of your gums

Taking good care of your gums is important, not only for your oral health but overall health too; looking after oral hygiene is beneficial to you in many ways.

It isn’t difficult to look after your gums, nor expensive if you follow these steps you can ensure it’ll be effective.

Top tip… fit your cleaning habits around already formed habits! If you love the shower brush your teeth in the shower or use tepes in the car on the way to work. This means it takes little or no extra time, you don’t have to “find the time”!

1. Floss your teeth regularly

Whilst this doesn’t impact your gums directly, it is an important as part of an overall oral hygiene regime. Flossing helps remove the plaque and remnants of food from in between teeth that is beyond your toothbrush’s reach, preventing the build up of bacteria.

2. Visit your Dentist regularly for dental cleanings

Professionally cleaning your teeth is the only way to remove tartar. Your dentist can remove any build-up on your teeth and can identify any potential problems. Dentists are also well placed to see signs of other  possible problems that may be present, for example diabetes.

3. Stop Smoking

Smoking is associated with gum disease as it weakens your immune system, making it harder to fight off oral infections. Smoking makes it more difficult for your gums to recover once damaged.

4. Brush your teeth twice a day

Brushing your teeth helps reduce your risk to tooth loss and dental problems, as well as brightening up your smile and freshening your breath!

5. Use interdental brushes

Little brushes that go in between your teeth. Once you start using the brushes you’ll wonder why you didn’t before, a large area of the tooth and gum is cleaned in this way that is not easily accessible with a standard tooth brush.

6. Use disclosing tablets

The little tablet that makes a massive difference! Seeing plaque is difficult as it’s the same colour as the tooth and so hard to know if it removed or not. Disclosing tablets stain plaque pink – so it’s easy to see what needs to be brushed away. You can use them before brushing or after to see where you’ve missed. Great for kids and adults alike!

7. Use mouthwash

Using mouthwash is an effective tool in the fight against tooth decay as well as freshening your breath. There are lots of different types and they have different functions from helping gums by fighting bacteria to remineralising teeth.

8. Eating well

Consuming sugary foods and drinks will have an impact on your teeth, resulting in tooth decay. Sugar is also bad for your overall health! A clean and healthy diet not only makes sense but it makes you feel healthier!
